Celebrex contains ibuprofen, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by blocking an enzyme called cyclo-oxygenase (COX), which leads to the production of arachidonic acid. This causes the body to make prostaglandins (phospholipids), which in turn stimulates the production of mononuclear neutrophils. Celecoxib, commonly known by its brand name Celebrex, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that is used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It is widely used in the management of pain and inflammation, including osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Here are some key differences between Celebrex and other COX-2 inhibitors:
Celebrex is used to relieve pain and inflammation, including OA. It can be taken in two dosage forms – oral capsules and sublingual (under the tongue) capsules. The sublingual form is easier on the stomach, which reduces the risk of stomach irritation. The oral dosage is usually taken once daily, with or without food.
The dosage of Celebrex varies depending on the individual. It is typically taken once daily, with or without food, once daily, or as directed by your healthcare provider. The maximum recommended dose for osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis is 100mg per day.
Like any COX-2 inhibitor, Celebrex can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. These can include:
Dizziness
Indigestion
Nausea
Rash
If any of these effects persist or worsen, seek medical attention immediately.
COX-2 inhibitors should not be taken if:
You have a history of heart disease, stroke, or liver or kidney disease
You have inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease
You are taking an NSAID (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) to relieve pain
You are over 65 and taking a COX-2 inhibitor for a prolonged period
Before starting treatment with Celebrex, it is important to consult with your doctor to ensure it is the right option for you. They may have additional guidance or recommend alternative treatments.

Like any medication, Celebrex can cause side effects. However, they are not limited to:
